Sunan Abi Dawud
Sunan Abi Dawud 1905
Ja’far bin Muhammad reported on the authority of his father: “We entered upon Jabir bin ‘Abd Allaah. When we reached him, he asked about the people until he reached me, and I said: ‘I am Muhammad bin ‘Ali bin Husain.’ He inclined his hand to my head and undid my upper button, then undid my lower button, then placed his palm between my chest, and I was in those days a young boy. He said: ‘Welcome to you and your family, O nephew. Ask whatever you wish.’ I asked him while he was blind. The time of prayer came, and he stood up wrapped in a mantle, wrapping himself in it—meaning a patched garment—and whenever he placed it on his shoulder, its ends returned to him due to its smallness, and he led us in prayer while his upper garment was by his side on the peg. I said: ‘Tell me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’ He indicated with his hand and folded nine, then said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stayed nine years without performing Hajj, then an announcement was made to the people in the tenth year that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was performing Hajj. A large number of people came to Madinah, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and to act according to his actions. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out, and we set out with him until we reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, where Asma’ bint ‘Umais gave birth to Muhammad bin Abi Bakr. She sent word to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), asking: “What should I do?” He replied: “Take a bath, bandage your private parts with a cloth, and enter into ihram.”
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed in the mosque, then mounted al-Qaswa’ until his she-camel stood straight with him on the Baida’.’ Jabir said: ‘I looked as far as my gaze could reach in front of him, of riders and walkers, and to his right like that, and to his left like that, and behind him like that. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was among our midst, and the Quran was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did of anything, we did it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) began the talbiyah with the declaration of tawhid: “Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaik la sharika laka labbaik, inna al-hamda wa an-ni’mata laka wal-mulka la sharika laka.” The people pronounced the talbiyah with this very phrasing by which they made the talbiyah, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not reject any of it, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) maintained his own talbiyah.’
Jabir said: ‘We did not intend anything other than Hajj; we did not know ‘Umrah. When we came to the House with him, he touched the corner, ran fast for three [circuits], and walked four, then advanced to the Station of Abraham and recited: {And take the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer}, and placed the Station between himself and the House.’ My father said, and Ibn Nufail and ‘Uthman said: ‘And I do not know that he mentioned it except from the Prophet (ﷺ).’ Sulaiman said: ‘And I do not know it except that he said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in the two rak'ahs {Say, He is Allah, One} and {Say, O disbelievers}. Then he returned to the House, touched the corner, then went out through the door to al-Safa. When he drew near to al-Safa, he recited: {Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah}, “We begin with what Allah began with.” So he began with al-Safa, ascended it until he saw the House, then magnified Allah, declared His oneness, and said: “La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu yuhyi wa yumitu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay'in qadir. La ilaha illallah wahdahu, anjaza wa’dahu wa nasara ‘abdahu wa hazama al-ahzaba wahdah.” Then he supplicated between that, saying like this three times. Then he descended to al-Marwah, and when his feet descended into the bottom of the valley, he ran, and when he ascended, he walked until he reached al-Marwah, and he did at al-Marwah what he had done at al-Safa. When it was the end of the tawaf on al-Marwah, he said: “If I had known of my affair what I came to know later, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made it an ‘umrah. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal, let him exit ihram and make it an ‘umrah.” So all the people exited ihram and clipped their hair, except the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who had the sacrificial animals with them.
Suraqah bin Ju’shum stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allah, is this for our present year or forever?” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) intertwined the fingers of his other hand, then said: “The ‘Umrah has entered into the Hajj”—repeating it twice—“No, but for ever and ever, no, but for ever and ever.”
‘Ali came from Yemen with the sacrificial animals of the Prophet (ﷺ) and found Fatimah among those who had exited ihram; she had worn dyed garments and used kohl. ‘Ali disapproved of that from her and asked: “Who commanded you to do this?” She replied: “My father.” So ‘Ali said in Iraq: “I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) seeking a ruling regarding what Fatimah had done, seeking the verdict of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) concerning what she mentioned, and I informed him that I had disapproved of that in her, and that she claimed her father commanded her to do it.” He said: “She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. What did you say when you assumed ihram for Hajj?” I said: “O Allah, I assume ihram for that for which Your Messenger assumed ihram.” He said: “Indeed, I have the sacrificial animal with me, so do not exit ihram.” The total of the sacrificial animals that ‘Ali brought from Yemen and what the Prophet (ﷺ) brought from Madinah was one hundred. So all the people exited ihram and clipped their hair, except the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who had sacrificial animals with them.
When it was the Day of Tarwiyah, they headed towards Mina, and they assumed ihram for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) rode and prayed Dhuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib, ‘Isha', and Fajr in Mina. Then he waited a little until the sun rose, and he ordered a tent of hair to be set up for him, so it was pitched at Namrah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out, and Qurish had no doubt that he would stop at al-Mash'ar al-Haram at Muzdalifah, just as Quraysh used to do in the pre-Islamic period. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by that and came to ‘Arafah, and he found that the tent had been pitched for him at Namrah. He dismounted there, and when the sun passed the meridian, he ordered al-Qaswa’ to be saddled, so it was saddled for him. He rode until he came to the bottom of the valley, and he addressed the people, saying: “Indeed, your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, like the sacredness of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Behold! Everything from the pre-Islamic period is placed beneath my feet, and the blood-feuds of the pre-Islamic period are abolished. The first blood-feud of ours that I abolish is our blood-feud”—‘Uthman said: “the blood of the son of Rabi'ah”—and Sulaiman said: “the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib”—and some of these people said: “he was a foster child among Banu Sa'd, and Hudhail killed him.” “And the usury of the pre-Islamic period is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is our usury, the usury of ‘Abbas bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib; it is entirely abolished. Fear Allah regarding women, for you have taken them by the trust of Allah and made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. You have a right over them that they do not allow anyone you dislike to tread your beds. If they do that, strike them with a blow that does not leave a mark. They have a right over you to their provision and clothing in a reasonable manner. Indeed, I have left among you that after which you will never go astray if you hold fast to it: the Book of Allah. And you will be asked about me, so what will you say?” They said: “We bear witness that you have conveyed, fulfilled, and discharged your duty.” Then he raised his forefinger towards the sky, pointing it at the people, and said: “O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness!”
Then Bilal gave the adhan, then the iqamah, and he prayed Dhuhr. Then he gave the iqamah and prayed ‘Asr, and did not pray anything between them. Then he rode al-Qaswa’ until he came to the place of standing, and he made the belly of his she-camel al-Qaswa’ face the rocks, and he placed the path of the pedestrians in front of him, facing the qiblah. He kept standing until the sun set and the yellowish light slightly departed after the disk of the sun had gone. He seated Usamah behind him, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set off, having pulled the reins of al-Qaswa’ so tightly that its head touched the saddle-girth. He was pointing with his right hand, saying: “O people, tranquility! O people, tranquility!” Whenever he came to a mound from the mounds, he slightly slackened its reins until it climbed up. When he came to Muzdalifah, he combined Maghrib and ‘Isha’ with one adhan and two iqamahs—‘Uthman said: and he did not offer any supererogatory prayer between them, then they agreed—then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lay down until dawn broke, and he prayed Fajr when dawn became clear—Sulaiman said: with an adhan and an iqamah, then they agreed.
Then he rode al-Qaswa’ until he came to al-Mash'ar al-Haram, and he ascended it. ‘Uthman and Sulaiman said: He faced the qiblah, praised Allah, magnified Him, and declared His oneness—‘Uthman added: and declared His uniqueness—and he kept standing until it was very bright. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) hurried before the sun rose, seating al-Fadl bin ‘Abbas behind him, who was a man with beautiful hair, white, and handsome. As the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) hurried, some women were passing quickly, and al-Fadl began looking at them. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) placed his hand on al-Fadl's face, al-Fadl turned his face to the other side, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) moved his hand to the other side, while al-Fadl turned his face to the other side looking, until he came to Muhassir, where he urged it slightly. Then he took the middle path that comes out at the greatest Jamrah, until he reached the Jamrah that is by the tree, and he threw seven pebbles at it, magnifying Allah with every pebble, like the pebbles thrown with the thumb and forefinger. He threw them from the bottom of the valley.
Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) turned to the place of sacrifice and sacrificed sixty-three [camels] with his hand. Then he ordered ‘Ali, and he sacrificed the remainder, and he made him a partner in his sacrificial animal. Then he ordered that a piece from each camel be taken, so it was put in a pot and cooked, and they both ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Sulaiman said: Then he rode, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) hurried to the House and prayed Dhuhr in Makkah. He came to Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib supplying water at Zamzam, and said: “Draw water, O Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib; were it not that the people would overwhelm you regarding supplying water, I would draw it with you.” So they handed him a bucket, and he drank from it.
